DEWA launches ‘Let’s Make this Summer Green’ campaign
Within the framework of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA)'s efforts to establish the foundations of environmental sustainability, support sustainable development in the Dubai and raise awareness about the importance of energy and water conservation, especially during the summer, DEWA launched ‘Let's make this summer green’ for the second year running. The campaign was launched via social media channels, as well as other audio-visual media channels.
The campaign runs from the beginning of May, until the end of August. It focuses on several guidelines including rationalisation of consumption during the Holy Month of Ramadan, reducing power consumption during peak hours (12 noon to 6 pm), setting the AC to 24C, tips for when away on summer vacation, fixing water leaks, and installing drip irrigation systems.
DEWA’s Conservation Team organises lectures and field visits to government organisations and departments, private companies, malls, and union centres. During the Holy Month of Ramadan, DEWA also organises events and workshops, in cooperation with the General Authority of Islamic Affairs & Endowment (GAIAE), the Rashid Bin Mohammed Ramadan Gathering and the Dubai International Holy Quran Award. DEWA also cooperates with the Dubai Police through the Madfaa Al Iftar programme, which includes competitions related to rationalisation of power consumption.
“The campaign is part of our ongoing efforts to establish the foundations of environmental sustainability and support the sustainable development of Dubai by using electricity, water, and natural resources sensibly, to ensure their sustainability for generations to come. We urge everyone to adopt a conscious and responsible lifestyle, especially during summer time. These efforts contribute to achieving the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to promote sustainable development, and reduce Dubai’s carbon footprint according to the Dubai Plan 2021, which aims to transform Dubai into a smart city whose environmental elements are clean, healthy and sustainable, and DEWA’s vision to become a sustainable innovative world class utility,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.
“This summer initiative is a continuation of the series of initiatives, programmes and awareness activities launched by DEWA throughout the year. DEWA managed to reduce water usage over the past eight years through its various campaigns, and managed to save 1.54 gigawatts (GW) of electricity, and 6.2 billion imperial gallons of water, saving AED 957 million, and limiting carbon dioxide emissions by over 813,000 tonnes, which is equivalent to the cultivation of 944,000 trees. The great impact of these savings is presented in support of the sustainable development process in Dubai, and the UAE in general,” added Al Tayer.
“DEWA strives to encourage all members of society to adopt rational use as part of daily life. This is achieved by encouraging customers to reduce their electricity consumption. Through this campaign, we urge everyone to adopt a conscious and responsible lifestyle, and raise awareness about adopting environmentally friendly practices through simple steps, that enable everyone to make a difference and be part of the positive change; making this behaviour an integral part of our lifestyle. We are encouraged by the active and positive participation of our consumers, in all sectors, to respond effectively to the advice and guidance provided to them by DEWA,” said Khawla Al Mehairi, Vice President of Marketing & Corporate Communications at DEWA.
DEWA urges its customers to follow certain guidelines, to rationalise their consumption of water and electricity. The guideline is published on DEWA’s website www.dewa.gov.ae and on DEWA’s smart app.

Mohammed Abdul Kareem Al Shamsi, Senior Director of Sustainability and Climate Change at DEWA received the award at a ceremony in the Houses of Parliament, London. More than 200 companies, around the world, participated in this award.
“DEWA adopts a clear strategy to establish and promote CSR, environmental protection, and the conservation of natural resources to achieve sustainable development. This supports the aspirations of our wise leadership and the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The three awards highlight DEWA’s leading position in promoting sustainability and reducing carbon emissions. The International CSR Excellence Awards are also an excellent addition to DEWA’s list of achievements, through which we support international efforts to achieve comprehensive sustainability, and to further consolidate the concept of sustainability as an essential pillar and an integral part of the institutional strategy and culture of DEWA. This supports the UAE Vision 2021 to achieve environmental sustainability, and the objectives of Dubai Plan 2021 to make Dubai a smart, integrated, connected and sustainable city with clean, healthy and sustainable environment,” said HE Saeed Mohamed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.
“DEWA’s Emission Reduction Programme is a unique programme in the region that sets short, medium and long-term emission reduction measures until 2030, taking into account the increasing demand for energy and water in Dubai, as well as Dubai’s conservation and rationalisation initiatives. From 2006 to 2016, DEWA’s energy production efficiency increased by 25.47%, which is equivalent to the reduction of 37.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. This has been achieved through the optimized design of power plants, energy efficiency enhancement, gas turbines efficiency improvement, improved processes, and breakout planning. DEWA is one of the first utilities in the region to receive the ISO 14064-1 certification, in recognition of the system it has adopted in monitoring and reporting greenhouse gases,” added Al Tayer.
Al Tayer explained that DEWA adopts the highest international standards for the preparation of sustainability reports, and is keen on keeping abreast of the latest innovations in the field of sustainability and reporting, and building strategic relationships and partnerships with its global counterparts that share the goal of advancing sustainability in all its aspects and dimensions.
“Reaffirming its efforts to raise the bar of its corporate performance in sustainability, DEWA joined the Global Reporting Initiative’s (GRI) GOLD Community, which gathers organisations shaping the future of sustainability and reporting, and empowering decision making for a more sustainable economy around the world. DEWA has also been invited by the GRI to be part of the Standards Pioneers Programme, which gathers organisations from all over the world that have demonstrated leadership in Sustainability Reporting. DEWA is one of 100 organisations worldwide who will adhere to the new standard before it becomes mandatory for all organisations by the end of June 2018,” noted Al Tayer.
“DEWA’s excellence in the field of energy conservation comes as a result of extensive efforts. DEWA has given utmost importance to initiatives and programmes that raise awareness on the importance of rationalisation and conservation of natural resources, which demonstrated the extent to which all members of society can contribute to national and global efforts aimed at reducing the phenomena of climate change and global warming. Between 2009 and 2016, DEWA’s customers saved over 1.5 TW/h of electricity and 6.2 billion gallons of water, worth over AED 967 million. The generated savings resulted in offsetting around 831,000 tonnes of carbon emissions, which equates to planting 944,000 trees,” concluded Al Tayer.
The International CSR Excellence Award comprises 40 categories, in which a large number of government and private institutions worldwide compete each year to implement global standards and practices in sustainability and social responsibility, in addition to the launch of special initiatives on key challenges faced by companies in these areas.

DEWA organises workshop for the third Carbon Ambassadors Programme on sustainability and climate change in the UAE
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), in cooperation with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, has organised a workshop on sustainability and climate change in the UAE, for the third Carbon Ambassadors Programme. The programme was launched by DEWA, with the support of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and in cooperation with the Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence (Dubai Carbon). This is a continuation of DEWA's efforts to drive sustainability and sustainable development in Dubai and the UAE, and to prepare the younger generations to work for a brighter and more sustainable future.
The workshop was held as an essential requirement of the programme, at the Sustainable Building in Al Quoz. A presentation was given by a specialised lecturer from the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment. It included a number of climatic and environmental issues, including the UN negotiations on climate change and the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Paris in December, 2015, as well as the participation of the State at the 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 22) at the Marrakech Climate Change Conference. This supports the framework of international cooperation to face environmental challenges and reduce carbon emissions, which is the main cause of global warming, as well as a detailed presentation of national strategic plans, and the efforts of the State in addressing the effects of climate change and the preservation of the environment and natural resources.
“The Carbon Ambassadors Programme is one of the leading programmes in promoting the role of youth in environmental awareness. We are committed to contributing to the achievement of the vision of our wise leadership, and the objectives of the UAE Vision 2021 to achieve a sustainable environment and integrated infrastructure. This can only happen through various national projects focusing on the environment and clean energy to build a sustainable and a better future, in line with our celebration of the Golden Jubilee of our Union. These projects include quantitative and qualitative projects, recently launched by DEWA, which work to enhance economic growth, such as the transition to clean and efficient alternative energy sources, such as solar power,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.
“The workshop contributed to training young Emiratis, to prepare the younger generation to be aware of environmental issues, and to raise awareness on the importance of tackling climate issues, as well as the contribution of the UAE to the spread of clean energy and its use of it as a sustainable alternative to traditional energy. This comes in line with its international agreements to reduce climate change, which obliges all parties to define their responsibilities and activate their role through international cooperation. HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, once said, “The unity of nations and people in addressing the challenges of Climate Change is the best and shortest path in maintaining the Earth's environment. Sustaining our environment remains a fundamental principle in our development programs, national projects and governmental policies,”” added Al Tayer.
In April 2017, Al Tayer announced the launch of the 3rd Carbon Ambassadors programme, building on the success of the first two programmes. Forty students joined the first batch of the programme, doubling to 80 in the second batch. They have shown promising capabilities, and proved their ability to bear the leading responsibilities entrusted to them, and lead the efforts of Dubai and the UAE to build a green and sustainable economy.
“The workshop aims to empower future generations. Participation in the workshop is a key condition in the completion of the third Carbon Ambassadors Programme, which was launched by DEWA. The programme aims to prepare youth to face climate change, by minimising risk, increasing adaptability, and conserving biodiversity and economy, to ensure a brighter future for our beloved country,” said Dr Yousef Al Akraf, Executive Vice President of Business Support and Human Resources at DEWA.
